Double Reef

First plateau

Location:
Downtown Otrabanda, between Superior Producer and Playa Sonesta, by the Aqualectra factory. 10 mins drive from The Dive Bus, 5 mins from Piscadera area.

Facilities:
None.

Beach:
None. Tatty and dirty but you're here for the dive, not the scenery up top ;o)

Shade:
None.

Shore entry:
Can be very challenging. You DEFINITELY need boots for this shore entry, or sandals that you can clip to your BC. Swell and slippery, sharp rocks make this shore entry quite a challenge even on a calm day...

Swim out:
About 5-10 mins depending on swell/surf and surface current.

Dive:
We surface swim out over the blade fire corals and descend down a wall to the first drop off at about 40 feet. Stay at that depth for forests of pillar coral, giant sponges and HEAPS of large, schooling fish. Or descend down the second reef if you want to go deep and check out the interesting coral formations. Watch your depth - this drop off is DEEP!

Non-divers:
Honestly? Nothing. But Denny's is just up the road ;o)

What’s so special?:
So it’s not in the prettiest location and it can be quite a challenge to enter the ocean and swim out, BUT it’s a gorgeous dive site in excellent condition.

Notes:

  • Tough entry/exit conditions, strong surface and underwater currents plus the depth mean that this dive site is only suitable for experienced divers which means Advanced Open Water certified plus 30+ dives. Divers MUST have made a previous dive with The Dive Bus prior to diving this site.

  • Do not bring anything other than what you need for the dive along with you. The parking area is notorious for vehicle break-ins.

Divers' comments:

I tell you guys, this dive site has so much to offer and I am sure is rarely seen due to the difficulty in getting in and out and the stupid current that lives there!  This is one of the few places I have been with fields of Pillar corals..."
